BMI (Body Mass Index) is a measurement of the fatness or thinness of a human body. BMI came into popular use around 1972 as an easy to calculate measurement of the amount of fat relative to the height and weight of an individual in order to assist in medical diagnosis.
Your Weight Issues
There is considerable misunderstanding surrounding weight issues.
For example some cultures, we can think of those in the South Pacific, believe that fat women are more attractive than their slimmer sisters. In the West the perception is that women should have hour-glass figures and men toned, flab free muscular bodies.
Perhaps the most important weight issue is health, there is evidence that grossly overweight people are more likely to suffer health problems. This may, of course be due to the fact that they do little or no exercise and over eat, while many simply large people may regularly workout, eat sensibly and so are physically very fit. It is all in the genes!
Psychologically, media pressure has made many women over conscious of their bodies. Anxiety over perceived weight problems is probably the most common but other imaginary or factual body shortcomings all tend to lower self esteem in both men and women.
